The Ponte 25 de Abril which spans the Tagus River in Lisbon was built in 1966 by the American Bridge Company, who also built the similar San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge suspension bridge in San Francisco.

The Ponte 25 de Abril is 2,277 meters long, making it the 17th longest suspension bridge in the world (at the time of writing) and 70 meters above the water level. The bridge carries trains and cars and has a toll for the northbound route. Around 150,000 cars and over 150 trains cross the bridge daily on the two rail tracks and 6 car lanes.

Originally called the Salazar Bridge, the bridge was renamed after the day the 1974 Carnation Revolution took place in Portugal.
