Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace), Evora

Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Graca
Nossa Senhora da Graça, Evora

The church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (Church of our Lady of Grace) in Evora is noted for its 16th-century facade.

Four huge stone figures of Atlas adorn the building, which is only viewable from outside. In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan who supported the heavens. The church was founded in 1511 and was designed by the architect Miguel de Arruda. Following the dissolution of Portugal's monasteries in the 19th century, the building fell into disrepair.

It was restored in the 20th century and the structure is now used by the Portuguese military.
