Windmills in Algarve Portugal

The western Algarve can be a pretty windy place with strong breezes blowing in from the Atlantic. A number of picturesque windmills were built in the 19th century on the Algarve coast and were used as olive and corn mills.

Calling abroad from Portugal – easier than it seems

Calling abroad from Portugal – easier than it seems.
When you've moved away from your family to work abroad, you realize how important is to hear them as often as possible. And, since calling internationally can get quite expensive, here are some more affordable options for keeping in touch with your loved ones.

Calling cards or how the Portuguese call them "Cartões Telefônicos Pré-pagos para Ligações Telefônicas Internacionais" can be purchased either online or in physical shops. Portugal Telecom offers a varied selection of phone cards to call different countries that can be purchased in their stores. For more information about their products, check out their website.

International calling cards from providers such as EnjoyPrepaid.com are a flexible and affordable option for making international calls. With one of these prepaid cards, you can call anywhere in the world at rates as low as 1cent per minute. They can even be used from your computer, provided you have a working internet connection or from your smartphone.

Calling from your PC is a good alternative to traditional landlines and mobiles since it is often cheaper and easier to use. Skype or Google Talk is a good choice and if your loved ones also have a PC, the calls are free. If you're looking to call internationally, go for a calling card since the rates are sensibly lower.

Why cheap travel insurance works well for people passionate about travel

Why cheap travel insurance works well for people passionate about travel.
Are you crazy about travelling around the world for more than 3 months at a time? The rise of the staycation has meant that travel insurance costs have actually become cheaper for most travellers. Staycations continue to soar in popular in the autumn and winter months because many people in the UK want to escape the cold chill of colder months for sunnier climates. If this sounds like you, check out a few of the top advantages of cheaper travel insurance:

• Rewards: Cheap travel insurance rewards people who know the difference between Paris and Pyongyang. As a frequent traveller, you have sophisticated taste when it comes to travelling however that does not mean that you have to splash out on too much. Keep your purse bulging with plenty of money for entertaining yourself when you go travelling by purchasing cheap travel insurance. The rewards are a lower rate than if you are not a frequent traveller.

• Value for money from insurance: If you have wanderlust, you know that getting the most value for money is crucial if you are going to continue to indulge in travelling. It is almost as if travel insurance providers are reading the minds of today’s brand of travellers who want to save as much money as possible. The wealth of savings to be made with your cheap travel insurance policy comes when you choose multi-trip insurance cover. This is ideal if you are someone who likes to go on more than one holiday per year.

• Departure cover: It is every common frequent traveller’s worst nightmare but sometimes you can’t help it if the traffic is very thick! If you miss your departure or if you miss your flight back to the UK, do not worry because some cheap travel insurance providers give you missed departure cover. This is bound to be a positive for people who love to travel with their families. You can rest easy because if you have a large family entourage, missing the flight to your destination does not mean that your holiday has ended.

Travel Insurance Tip: When you arrive in your destination for your staycation holiday, be sure to check out where all the local hospitals are and to check if they are near where you are staying. This is to give you a sense of direction in case you become ill whilst you are on holiday or if you injure yourself.

Cabo de Sao Vicente

Cabo de Sao Vicente is where the end of the world was - or at least, where people thought it was. When Europeans believed the world was flat, the most Western part of Europe would have been the last land before the world ended.

Cabo de Sao Vicente.

Despite this historical importance, Cabo de Sao Vicente is remarkably undeveloped.

A naval academy, which gave birth to navigation techniques which would change the history of the world was established here. There is also a lighthouse and a solitary cafe and gift shop in the grounds.

Cabo de Sao Vicente.

Cabo de Sao Vicente offers fantastic views back along the cliffs of the West Coast but sadly the academy blocks an uninterrupted view towards America.

Cabo de Sao Vicente is named after a preacher who was burnt at the stake by the Romans in the 4th century.

Praia da Bordeira Carrapateira

The beach at Praia da Bordeira, Carrapateira in the west of the Algarve on the Atlantic Coast, features 3km of fine, often largely deserted sand. Cross the Ribeira da Bordeira river from Carrapateira to get to this long, windswept beach, which is popular with surfers.

Portuguese PM Resigns

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates has resigned his post after the Portuguese parliament refused to back his Socialist Party's austerity budget of increase spending cuts and more tax rises.

The fallout of the impasse is likely to see an EU-mandated rescue package for the country similar to the austerty deals thrashed out for Ireland and Greece in 2010.

Portugal's debt crisis is worrying European markets.

"This political crisis has very grave consequences for the confidence Portugal needs from institutions and the financial markets," Socrates said.

Socrates presented his resignation to Portugal's President Anibal Cavaco da Silva.
