Pasteis de Belem

Pasteis de Belem could well be Lisbon's most famous cafe. Located in Belem close to the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, the Maritime MuseumBelem Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, the Pasteis de Belem has been in business since 1837.

Things can get pretty busy especially during the summer holiday period in August as these queues outside the cafe testify.

Pasteis de Belem is known for its signature pastel de nata (pastel de Belem) egg tarts. Though unconfirmed, it is thought the pastel de nata was invented by monks at the nearby Jerónimos Monastery. Other delicacies include Bolo Ingles, Bolo Rainha, Salgados and Sortido.

The Pasteis de Belem lives up to its reputation for excellence and is a must-visit on your trip to Lisbon. The cafe's interior is tiled with beautiful blue and white azulejos.
