The Iglesia Colegial del Divino Salvador (Church of the Divine Saviour) in Seville is the largest and most important church in the city after the cathedral.

History

The church stands where the Roman basilica once did and was constructed over a former mosque.

The mosque, which had been reconsecrated as a church, was mostly demolished in 1671 and a new building rose in its place. The architect was Leonardo de Figueroa. He incorporated the base of the minaret in the church's bell tower.

The church was extensively restored again in the early 21st century.

Architecture

The Baroque church is noted for the ornate gilded woodwork of its interior and 14 altars.

The monumental main altarpiece was made between 1770 and 1778 by Cayetano de Acosta in the Baroque style. The altar of the Capilla Sacramental is also the work of Cayetano de Acosta.

Plaza del Salvador is lined with several bars and cafes and is an ideal place to relax.
