Portuguese Embassy Tokyo

Portugal is the European country with the longest relationship with Japan as Portuguese explorers were the first western visitors to arrive on Japanese shores in the late 16th century. The Portuguese introduced both firearms and Christianity to Japan as well as several words that survive in the language. The first Portuguese came ashore on the southern island of Tanegashima in 1543.
