Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vitória Lisbon

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vitória (Church of Our Lady of Victory) is located in the Baixa area of Lisbon.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vitória Lisbon, Portugal.

A chapel of the name Nossa Senhora da Vitória was founded in 1556 and like many churches in Lisbon was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755.

Reconstruction began in 1765 and was completed only in 1824. The church is designed on a longitudinal plan with a single nave and the entrance reached by a small flight of stairs facing south.

The beautiful organ dates from 1793. The main wooden image of Our Lady of Victory is attributed to Machado de Castro.

Igreja Paroquial do Santíssimo Sacramento

The Igreja Paroquial do Santíssimo Sacramento is located in the Chiado district of central Lisbon. The church was first established in 1147, shortly after D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, captured Lisbon from the Moors.

At first a small chapel, by 1750, it was a grand Baroque church. However, like much of the surrounding area, it was completely destroyed by the earthquake that devastated Lisbon on November 1, 1755.

The current church was designed by the architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos and opened in 1784 as part of the reconstruction of the Portuguese capital as planned by the Marquis of Pombal.

However, Pombal wanted the new church to face south, to fit in with his grand scheme for Lisbon but the church insisted on the doorway facing east, which is does, and is believed to be the only church in Lisbon to do so.

Further restoration work on the church meant that it only reopened in 2009 after over 20 years of repairs.

Parque Station Lisbon

Parque Station on the Blue Line (Linha Azul) of the Lisbon metro is famous for its azulejo tiles that reference the work of the writer Fernando Pessoa and others.

Parque Station Lisbon.

Parque was one of the original 11 stations of the Lisbon metro that opened in 1959. Architect Francisco Keil do Amaral (1910-1975) designed the model for these stations, which was used for all subsequent stations built on the Lisbon metro until 1972. The original eleven stations, except Avenida, all had artwork by painter Maria Keil (1914-2012).

Parque Station Lisbon.

Parque Station was refurbished by artists Françoise Schein and Federica Matta. They created the blue cathedral at Parque with 450,000 hand-painted tiles in 1994. There are maps of the world inspired by Portugal's Age of the Discoveries period juxtaposed with quotes with an emphasis on human rights by such writers as Lao-Tse, Plato and Gilles Deleuze, author of Capitalism and Schizophrenia.

Igreja Santana Albufeira

The Igreja Santana (Santa Ana) is a pretty, 18th century church located in the old town of Albufeira on the hill leading up from road overlooking the cliffs. The church is dedicated to St. Anne, Jesus' maternal grandmother. The former chapel to St. Anne, down on the beach, was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, so it was decided to rebuild the church on the higher ground where it now stands.

It is well worth having a look inside the cool, spacious interior to admire the fine, gilded, wooden altar painted in blue, possibly the work of master sculptors Francisco Xavier Guedelha and João Baptista.

The church has a single nave and three chapels. The baroque high altar (pictured below) has a central statue of St. Anne flanked by St. Joseph and the child Jesus (on the right) and by her husband St. Joachim (on the left).

There are other carved statues within the church including a fine one of Christ crucified.

The gilded wooden pulpit is also Baroque in style.

The major festival associated with the church, Festa Nossa Senhora da Orada occurs on 14th August when an image of the Virgin Mary and the child Jesus is paraded around town and transported on a boat.

The Made Inn in the old town area of Portimão on the Algarve comes highly recommended.

A boutique style hotel with super friendly staff who can really provide in depth information on where to eat in town and how to get around.

Vila Recife Albufeira

The Vila Recife in Albufeira is situated above the main square and seafront in the old part of town close to the Igreja Matriz (Nossa Senhora da Conceição) and the Igeja Santana.

Vila Recife Albufeira, Algarve.

The Vila Recife is overall a pleasant place to stay with a large courtyard where breakfast can be taken al fresco and a pool. At present Wifi access is restricted to the lobby and the cafe/bar/courtyard area.

The rooms can be light and spacious with a little lounge and tiny balcony overlooking the pool.

Vila Recife Albufeira.

The rooms facing the main square and the town's pumping bar/disco action can be a little noisy in the high season in August.

The Vila Recife is close to a number of bars (which have better Wifi) and a small convenience store that stays open late. Also close by is the interesting Museum of Sacred Art housed in the Igreja de São Sebastião.

Another good hotel located close by is the Hotel Sol e Mar.
